My organisation
Indian Railways (IR), one of the world’s largest integrated rail networks, is a cornerstone of India’s economic development and national connectivity. Operating over 68,000 km of routes, IR manages one of the most complex mixed-traffic systems globally, balancing the simultaneous movement of high-density passenger services and heavy freight flows across the network. Freight transport is the principal revenue driver for IR, supporting critical sectors such as power, steel, cement, foodgrains, fertilizer, and automobiles. To enhance capacity and efficiency, IR has undertaken major infrastructure expansion through the commissioning of the Dedicated Freight Corridors (DFC). The Eastern and Western DFCs are designed to segregate freight operations from passenger routes, enabling faster transit times, improved reliability, and significantly higher throughput. These corridors are supported by modern terminals, advanced signalling, and high-horsepower locomotives for seamless long-haul operations. Traffic control systems are being progressively upgraded through Centralised Traffic Control (CTC), Electronic Interlocking, Automatic Block Signalling, and real-time monitoring platforms such as FOIS and TMS, ensuring better command over train movements and optimised utilisation of line capacity. Safety remains a core priority, with large-scale deployment of Kavach—India’s indigenous Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system—along with continuous track monitoring, machine-based maintenance, and enhanced crew management systems. On the passenger front, IR is modernising through Vande Bharat trainsets, station redevelopment, improved ticketing platforms, and upgraded passenger amenities, ensuring safe, comfortable, and inclusive mobility. Through sustained investment in infrastructure, technology, and operations, Indian Railways continues to strengthen its leadership in freight logistics and passenger services, positioning itself as a modern, efficient, and future-ready national transporter
